The 2003 Nissan Altima fuel pump is under the back seat. To gain access there are two locking mechanisms under the front of the seat. Pull the two lock rings toward the front of the car to release the seat from the locks. Remove the bottom seat cushion which gives you access to the fuel pump cover plate. The plate is on the driver side and is black. There are four 1/4 turn plastic phillips head locks on the cover. Release the 4 locks, lift the cover and disconnect the electrical connection to the pump. Disconnect the fuel line which will have residual pressure in the line. Squeeze the connector lock fitting which is usually white or clear color, and with a twisting motion pull the fuel line fitting toward the front of the car. Fuel will pour out, so have something under the vehicle or fuel line to catch or absorb the fuel. The pump is secured in the tank by a threaded black ring. Loosen the ring by turning it counter clockwise until it is removed. Then lift the fuel pump half way up. Now there is some interference from two wires connected at the bottom of the pump, and from the fuel gauge sending unit float. You will have to tilt the pump and manuever it until you clear the float and wiring. Cautions: No smoking, do not bend or distort the sending unit float arm, the fuel line is under pressure, note the location of the pump assembly O ring seal, assembly is the reverse of disassembly, and the entire assembly is replaced, and not just the pump like other vehicles. The pump assembly has the filter/sock incorporated with the unit, and it is the only filter in the entire fuel system.
