Are speedometer and steering linked?

Asked by yelloz Mar 21, 2012 at 04:30 PM about the 1991 Nissan 300ZX 2 Dr Turbo Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My speedometer will drop and the steering will get tight (like manual). When the speedommeter comes back so will the power steering. Scary when your in a turn and the power comes back to the steering. Locale mechanic can't help.

They are not related at all. When exactly is this happening? During turns only?

No not in a turn. I can be on the interstate at 80mph, or in town. It started off only happening once in a while, now once in a while it will work properly. The Hicas light does come on at times. does not stay on.

Mechanic told me it may be a short in the wiring that controls the speed sensor. I don't know what I would do with a wiring problem (if thats it). Nissan said they can't help with that.

That could def be the issue. the racks on those cars have speed sensitive steering, so if it looses speed signal, it could cut assist somewhat.
