I asked why my 1996 Ford Explorer won't accelerate in reverse, to which I received a question of " how fast do I want to go....the answer is I want to go fast enough to avoid an accident if I had to.

Asked by Richard9562 Oct 22, 2014 at 10:30 AM about the 1996 Ford Explorer 4 Dr Limited 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

There may come a time where I may have
to accelerate in reverse to avoid an
accident. So yes, I want to be able to
accelerate rather than creep in reverse.

Ok, I wasn't trying to be sarcastic. really. Best is to follow TransAm77 suggestion. I didn't understand you meant it will only go backwards as in idle, sorry 'bout that.

What happens when you give it gas? Dose the engine rev up but the Explorer does not or will the engine just not build up RPM?

Evening F.N. It's a confusing question. That's why I asked for clarification.

Yeah, I was off base and thought he meant it should go faster rather than creep like he says. And another apology for referring to you in 3rd person like you're not here Richard...and good evenin' back at ya Mark
