Those may be the servos. There should be a headshield covering the exhaust pipe close by. It's purpose is to keep the rubber from drying out and becoming brittle. I've seen cars where tranny work was performed, the heatshield removed and not replaced. It cooks the rubber.
The last 96 I worked on a few years ago had the shielf removed and discarded. Unfortunately Ford no longer makes the part. A check of the junkyards was unsuccessful. I had to make one out of sheetmetal. If memory serves there are two 10mm bolts holding it in place. Look for bolt holes nearby to determine if it is missing. Not replacing the shield will only give more problems down the road.
