No Park, No gears

Asked by harley966 Jun 25, 2015 at 02:48 PM about the 1996 Ford Explorer 4 Dr XLT 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

96 ford explorer.  Was coasting it downhill in drive at about 55 and it made a snapping noise and then this terrible whirring noise.  When i gassed on it stopped the noise.  About ten miles later it acted like it was out of gear and I thought I didn't put it drive all the way because it stopped really quick.  A few miles later it did it again like it wasn't in gear and I couldn't get it to go back in.  Waited a while and kept driving (I was driving home 150 miles) and it finally stopped completely but what's more it makes a grinding angry noise when you put it in park but park did still work.  Now it doesn't even stay in park, it rolls.

I doubt is was the gears, but it does sound like the bands went out. If there are bands in the 96.
