The plastic covers on my HORN buttons have BOTH broken off, what can I do?
Asked by OldsOwner Sep 03, 2013 at 10:28 PM about the 1996 Oldsmobile Ciera 4 Dr SL Sedan
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
On two separate occasions - a year apart - as I exited the vehicle I knocked the wheel
slightly and the plastic covers on the horn broke off. This may make my car illegal. I can
operate the horn by pressing the metal, but we all know that won't pass an inspection
(which i am due for). PLEASE HELP!!!

Wow...same car, SAME ISSUE...sometimes manufacturer's just use cheap parts that don't pass muster. When one came off, I thought someone had reached in during the summer and broken it...when it happened again, on the right, as I was barely 'love-tapping' the thing, I knew this must be yet another Olds crappy part issue. Mine still work, but only remnants remain. I'm familiar with the difficulties in finding older aftermarket parts, the situation making things temporarily 'illegal', and my own hatred of dealing with almost every car horn button I've ever tried 'fooling with'--SO, as I still have the 'remnants' (and I do mean these are barely hanging on--apparently even the inside mounts on these horn buttons are made of the same crap as the buttons), I've decided against fooling with this one any more than just cutting up some good old Tupperware bowls I find at a local consignment shop, or maybe some ABS rubberized plastic (preferring the bowls idea right now), into 'chips' I can then glue on with some sturdy, permanent glue, and I can keep mine working. 'tennisshoes' idea for the replacement push-button horn is the best option if you don't have enough of your current buttons left to try what I'm trying. These kits are in every car parts store, almost always under $15...think I've even seen some in some Walmarts.
I used modeling clay to form a new cover. (Self hardening. ) And am going. to add a momentary switch..thanks Uribe. 1996 old's Vieira.carp plastic, good car though
Same car - same problem. The molding new one's is not as easy as it looks...Tried the clay, tried the Tupperware and plexiglass.. sigh..
