99 caravan starter grinding on fly wheel.

Changed a friends starter on there 99
Plymouth voyager  the old starter gear was
grinding on starter before  removed.  The
Bendix was loose.  Installed  new starter  
and grinding is worse.  Thinking  that the
flex placement has been compromised.   
Any info  would be great.

Thanks. Actually the shim was hitting the fly wheel. I removed it straighten it, then put it back together. It cranked over no issues. Thanks hope this helps others...
