Ford Van leaks gas when filling up

1999 E150 when filling up tank gas comes out from top of tank. Does not leak any other time just when filling up. Could this be making the van run rough also. Got a code reading of P0442 could this leak be causing the code and engine run rough

Yes,lose fuel pressure, will make it run bad, check funnel hose going to tank, and seal where fuel pump is,may be bad.
This 35 gal model must be filled very slowly.the vent valve will not handle the fast pressure they put on the pumps these days.i went through all the same problems and found out pump slow and no problem
As an E150 van owner, I have to challenge GuruDYG4V's answer above, which also spread/misled 11 fellow E150 owners. Unless the author can provide evidence, I doubt the pumps nowadays increase their pressure, let alone increase to a point that older cars cannot handle it. Besides, why a bigger tank cannot handle higher pressure (even if the higher pressure hearsay were true)? Makes no sense to me. I ran into the same leaking fuel when pumping fuel issue. After some online research, and then confirmed by my own hand check, it was caused by the fuel filler hose deterioted and cracked. The crack is on the top so you won't see it, but it can be felt by touch. Knowning the root cause, the sensible solution is therefore replacing the failed hose with a new one. O'Reilly and Autozone, among others, carry this hose. Part number FNH036. Fellow E150 owners, go replace your hose, and thank me later.
