Why does my 98 E150 shut off when I press the brake pedal?

Asked by Ream Jul 21, 2015 at 12:22 AM about the 1998 Ford E-Series E-150 STD Econoline

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

4.2 liter V6 also all gauges go dead and
voltmeter drops to nothing.  Turn the
ignition forward and backwards a couple of
times and gauges work then fade to dead.
Use jump box to start and when depressing
the brake pedal to put in drive, the car dies.
This happens in park and neutral.  What
gives, I've always been a Ford guy and I'm
tight on cash. Can anybody give me any
ideas?

First thought would be to check your battery clamps for tightness and any corrision. Also check to make sure charging system is working. Use a multimeter. Check voltage at the battery with vehicle off, should be at least 12.5v, then with wehicle running, should be higher, somewhere around 14v.
