does the steering column need to be removed to replace the turn signal switch ?

The columns that had a metal casing surrounding the switch ? No, the steering wheel must be removed with a suitable puller, or by a skilled experienced person. the steering columns that had a plastic mast jacket ? those you could remove the lower section and lift the upper for access to the MF switch on the left.
