with a dual 12 v bayyery system why do the batteries drain?

the lock cylinder is in the lock position and nothing is on within the instrument
panel. the only way I can keep the batteries charged is to disconnect the
negative cables until I'm ready to start it. Then it is fine

There is a short somewhere going to need to track it down, May need to use a short finder, they sell them at Amazon and other at some locations. I will upload a photo but it may get deleted by the site since it is not my photo.
