Wat would cause a check engine light to come on

I have a 2006 pontiac g6 gt and the check engine light is on what would be
the problem as to it coming on?

i could be lot of things something as simple as a gas cap. Best thing to do is take it to advance auto or auto zone and they will check the codes for free
