My Pontiac G6 won't start
Asked by Tim 'Sam' Aug 17, 2018 at 03:04 PM about the 2006 Pontiac G6 GTP
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
After driving my 2006 g6 gtp for a
long while after killing it it won't
start back up until you let it set for
a while. When you turn the key
nothing happens except all the
lights and gauges come on like
normal. Seems like no signal
going to the starter. Already
replaced the starter and all the
relays but same problem. First
thing in the morning you can start
and kill it and start it up until u
drive for a long period. Then you
just have to wait for a while until
something cools down. Please
help

Turn the turn the switch til all your dash lights come on and wait and see if the security light goes off, if it don’t that may be the problem. I had that happen to me on a Chevy Malibu. Had it by passed by a mechanic friend of mine
I have the same problem on a car I bought in February. It died the first day I got it! It has been sitting for a while waiting for a friend to put in a new engine. Just got it back, new starter, new battery, full of gas. The security light does NOT stay on anymore. I programed the pass III key, but when the engine compartment is hot, the car will not start. So once I drive it for awhile and turn it off, I have to wait for hours before it will start again. After 2 hours I checked it last night and the whole engine compartment including the fuse box were still really hot and it would not start. This morning it started fine. How do I fix this?!?!?
The starter is literally 2 inches from the catalytic converter on the 3.5 V6. (2006 G6 GT) Once the engine gets hot (catalyst) the starter heat soaks and will not crank until it cools down. This is my experience. I have since installed a heat shield and the occurrences have reduced.
I have the same problem on my 2006 g6 from Rainey’s. It has stoped cranking four times now all they did so far is 1. change the starter 3 weeks later same thing this time they 2. checked the starter “fixed” an oil leak. 3. Checked the device kept it for a week. 4. Not cranking and they changed the device, checked the starter, “fixed” the oil leak. Each time it has been 3 weeks. The gages would come on but that was it no sound nothing. It’s not my battery had that checked.
I am having same problem car gets hot car want start no security lights or anything like that new battery could it be the solenoid or a sensor going bad seems a lot are having same issues
I'm attaching a jumper wire from the starter so that when this car acts up again as it does every couple months ... my sister can easily start it by turning the key forward, then tap the wire against the positive post of the battery!
Hey I found the solution to this issue and I want to share with everyone so that they don't go thru the same stress and trouble I went thru. After checking everything mechanically I was refered to an electrical mechanic and they FIXED it by replacing the fuse box and the terminal wire that went to the starter, once that fuse box gets hot it'll short out your starter, so there's the solution, the Damn fusebox was bad and the terminal to the starter was burnt out!! Get those fixed and you will not be stranded!!
If this works for any of you, please feel free to share, as well as other things pontiac g6 related info.
Alejandro, Thanks for your info on the G6 electrical ghost so many experience! Question: would you be able to post a photo of the "burnt" starter terminal so others can determine if that is their same problem?
I am about 80% sure that's the issue, I've got my fusebox replaced along with the terminal wire and I haven't had any problems starting it since..
Alejandro was right about the fuse box. In my case, however, there is no "burnt terminal." The problem is the internal wiring of the box, so you can not see it. I could tell this was the problem because the relay was good, but there was no current to the starter solenoid (small purple wire) during a no start when hot episode. Replacing the box fixed the problem. I had to know why, so I opened the old box to have a look. It is not made to be serviceable so this isn't easy. The internal bare copper wires for this circuit tested fine for continuity when cold, but when heated with a blow dryer to engine compartment temperatures, an invisible micro crack opened enough to break the circuit.
One of the grounds for the starter relay is lost.. at least on mine. Not allowing the relay to energize when you crank it. I ran a direct ground to that pin instead of replacing the whole distribution box. If you're looking at the four pins of the starter relay standing on the side, it's the top right pin.
I meant the four pins on the distribution box where you would insert the starter relay.
Nothing worked for me i tried all that
My lights come on in my car and my headlights come on replacement of a starter and now car won't turn over or start batterie is old is that the problem

GuruNHHVR - Is this what you mean?
GuruNHHVR Thanks. Problem solved.
Thank you Alejandro you have help us finally find the problem with our car not starting that has definitely stumped my husband an I for a while but that was why our car was not starting or engaging the starter to start after it ran for a little while or when it was hot outside. My husband said thanks cause he never would have thought of that an we were about to have the ignition switch changed. But my husband took the fuse box out of the car an took it inside and put it in the freezer for about 10 minutes and then put it back on the car it started right up crazy. Thanks again
I got the same issue with my 09 G6 3.5L V6. Replaced starter and battery and works fine while cool but won't start once hot. Cars at a dealership to diagnose problem as I'm tired of spending money to find out it didn't fix anything. Guess living in Phoenix area doesn't help
