I have a pontiac torrent, engine light.

Asked by debbes Feb 06, 2017 at 10:33 AM about the 2006 Pontiac Torrent FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My engine light has come on since I bought the car 4 years ago.  The
mechanic has said it is the emission light, no big deal, nothing wrong.  Now
I am a customer of Allstate and use their drivewise piece that connects to
the inside of my car for ins. purposes.  Anyway they now have said I have a
P0442, fuel vapor leak in the evaporative emission system, not the
mechanic (Allstate said this and they have teamed up with "Openbay"
repair shop.  Is this necessary, or just go when I need my next oil change
and have them check again?

Like your mechanic said, it is not that big of a deal unless you live in a state that has emissions checks. You would not pass. Some of these leaks can be resolved by testing, but on a po442 small leak, usually they have to do a smoke test to find it. It also means you could have a bad gas cap. Here is what this code is...P0442 PONTIAC - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected Small Leak...Possible causes; Missing or loose fuel cap, Incorrect fuel filler cap used, Fuel filler cap remains open or fails to close, Foreign matter caught in fuel filler cap, EVAP canister or fuel tank leaks, EVAP system hose leaking, Fuel tank leaking....P0442 PONTIAC Description, The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) tests the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system for the following conditions: - Large and small leaks - Excess vacuum - Purge flow during non-commanded conditions - Fuel Level and Fuel Pressure sensor faults - EVAP Purge and Vent Valve faults The PCM monitors the Fuel Tank Pressure sensor in order to determine the level of vacuum/pressure in the EVAP system. The PCM commands both the EVAP Purge Solenoid and the EVAP Vent Valve ON when the conditions are met in order to apply an engine vacuum to the EVAP system. The PCM commands the EVAP Purge Solenoid OFF once the system has reached a predetermined level of vacuum. This test verifies if a vacuum can be achieved in the EVAP system. Failure to develop a vacuum may be caused by a large leak or a restriction.

The Evap solenoid is in a container under the car. It’s an easy R&R if you have a lift. I replaced mine , hasn’t had an issue again.

I continue to get a CEL light for a small leak once in a while. I replaced both the purge valve and the vent valve. I clear the code and drive on.
