will the antifreeze overflow tank be empty when in limp mode and refill itself
Asked by Guru91685L Jan 04, 2022 at 05:07 PM about the 2021 Ford Explorer XLT AWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My Explorer went into limp mode one morning after I remote started it. The
warning system indicated overheating. Antifreeze overflow tank was empty
when I checked it. When it was towed to the deal for repair, they said the tank
was full and the problem was a disconnected wire. A week prior , the
transmission cooler leaked and was replaced. To replace it,I think they had to
drain the antifreeze and forgot to refill it.

what a scam. If they dumped out the antifreeze they should have asked you if it was ok, secondly, it seems odd that a ship would dink with it, dump out the coolant then charge you to put it back it with their product. I'd be ALL over that with better business bureau. If the coolant doesn't need flushing, reuse it.. nothing wrong with that ( of course they will tell you it's the wrong color type for that model, year and blah blah. Anything for a buck

Yeah, not a good start. Not going back to that dealer anymore. Thank for the input everyone
apparently I'm talking too much to get no points out of anything. Good to know GM
Any engine that uses coolant and is overheating will tend to push antifreeze into the overflow tank WHEN ITS HOT, and when its cool it SHOULD pull the antifreeze back into the radiator. If there uis notenough coolant in teh system that is possibly exactly what is happenning.

All this while being too inept to do the work themselves. They appreciate the advice they receive here no more than they appreciate tax-payers who fund their welfare checks….. I originally joined CarGurus to have some fun while helping others, but in time found this to be unrewarding. Lack of appreciation from CarGurus and distasteful posts by Social Media Creeps took their toll, and now I’ve quit this monumental waste of time.

Great. I didn’t know that. So when I checked the overflow tank (when the vehicle was in limp mode due to overheating) and it was empty, it is possible that when the overheating condition was resolved, the antifreeze returned to the overflow tank. Thanks again.
