2001 Pontiac Sunfire engine noise. The noise can be described as a ticking noise that accelerates with additional throttle. Engine cylinder head was replaced right before the noise began. I have already replaced the oil with little luck. The noise seems to start when the engine warms up and quiets down at high speeds. Any suggestions.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
140,000 miles. New Remanufactured Cylinder Head Installed. Replaced all Gaskets and Bolts. Recent Oil Change after Head Install.
One Mechanic said it could be valve slap and may go away over time. I do not trust his answer.

thats an overhead cam engine, so a leaking valve follower, or excessive clearance in one of the valves, pull one spark at a time to attempt what cylinder the noise is coming from
It is not an overhead cam engine. It is the 2.2 liter engine.
sounds like a lifter is stuck or sticking. Woulda been easy to do with the head out...
If I take the valve cover off, will I be able to see the sticking lifter? Or will I need to replace them all?
Sounds like either a stuck lifter, rocker or pushrod. I'd have someone try and re-adjust the rockers.
If you tale the valve cover off you may be able to see if a rocker doesnt move with the engine running. However this will sling oil everywhere. But lifters can fail but still move the rocker. Pushrods dont tend to stick. They can bend. Both should have been replaced when the head work was done.
low oil pressure will cause this problem.. sounds like the oil may also be thinning out too much when warm.. what oil did you put in it? 10 w30? synthetic?

I'm sorry it doesn't tick until it warms up.
i got the same problem, changed the head gasket, shaved the head, put new lifters, new push rods, new oil, oil pump, sending unit, it still ticks and got low oil pressure, im assuming its a spun bearing, so im bout to change the main and rod bearings
