2000 Montana overheating and no heat.

Asked by Tyler Mar 27, 2014 at 02:28 AM about the 2000 Pontiac Montana Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I've been driving my dad's 2000
Montana and it randomly overheats,
the gauge will read fine then it will
quickly raise to the red line and then it
will suddenly drop back down abd be
fine, also the heat is very sporadic.
The heat won't work at all then it
randomly will for a little while then it
will go out again all within 20 minutes.
Would I be wrong to think it's just an
air pocket, or could it be something
more serious? He had it taken into a
shop and I remember her said that
they couldn't flush the coolant system
because it would damage the heater
core because of sediment in the
system I believe. Should I try to bleed
the air out of the system?

It sounds like there are flow issues and you have a plugged cooling system. Damage the heater core? You need to have the system serviced. I would recommend a flush, even if it did damage the heater core (which I don't see happening), what would you rather pay to have replaced. A heater core or a seized engine due to overheating?
