I change the timing chain on my 2000 sunfire 2.4 but its backfiring

I changed the timing chain on my 2.4 and when  I crank it back fires. I checked the timing
and it was correct. Theres good amount of compression.

what is your compression readings, in psi, across the 4 cylinders?

Did you rotate the crank or cam before you replaced the chain? You might be set up 180 degrees off. Check the rotor position against #1 TDC. Both valves are closed and #1 is ready to fire when it pushes your finger out of the spark plug hole while cranking. (With the coil disabled!)
