Temperature Gauge bottoming out

Asked by Tiffany Apr 21, 2018 at 02:04 PM about the 1998 Pontiac Sunfire 2 Dr SE Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi, my question is when I'm driving my car, I
can watch my temperature gauge almost
bottom out completely. It never runs hot, but
instead it will go from normal temp to
reading cold and go back up to normal then
back down to cold again. The whole time the
car acts like it wants to die and then as
sudden as it starts, it stops again. What
could be causing my car to do this?

Possible low coolant level or stuck thermostat. Is the check engine light on?

I had the exact same problem on my 99 Sunfire. I got the same codes on the check engine light. I trouble shot it down to a bad temp sensor but after changing it twice I found out it was a short in the electrical connector for the temp sensor. I changed the connector out and it fixed it.
