My 1997 Pontiac sunfire is running hot just started today.... Would it run hot it needs oil

No. You have a cooling system problem which is not related to your engine lubrication. First, check your coolant level in the reservoir. If it below the indicators, add a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water and bring it up to the correct level. If that is OK, then move on to flow through the radiator, a stuck thermostat (must remove to check so just replace if it as old as the car), or whether the fans are functioning to draw air through the radiator. Not much else to the system except the water pump and the heater core but those would be the last to check.
