Car trouble

Asked by GuruVDGTF Aug 04, 2018 at 12:51 AM about the 1995 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1995 v6 3.4 firebird that makes a grinding
noise when it tries to turn over. I think the starter
got stuck on the fly wheel or its just getting ready
to seize up. Just wanted another opinion other
than mine.

It sounds like the Bendix or engaging spring is broken and the starter gear is not fully engaging the ring gear on the flywheel. It's best to change that real soon before it chews up the ring gear too. You can inspect for damage when you remove the starter. Usually the starter gear has 95% of the damage. That's a good thing. (And be safe. Disconnect battery while replacing starter.)
