can you tell by the vin # what model PONTIAC FIREBIRD IS

The VIN will tell you the engine size it was equipped with. Best way is to check the RPO (Regular Production Order) numbers. Should be on a sticker in the glove box. If it's really a Formula, there should be a W66 and WS9 in there.
i know oh the older firebirds trans ams and formila's had a different letter
The 5th digit in the VIN will tell you Firebird if it is an S or Formula & Trans Am if it is a W. Other digits have other meanings including the original engine type it was made with, bu no other model specific information. Samual was right, the RPO (also known as the SPID label will tell you more if it is still on the car. I think he meant for you to look for W66 (Formula Option Package) and WS6 (suspension type). There are decoders on several firebird sites that can tell you what the codes on the label mean and there was one site (Compnine) that will tell you what your car was built with by the VIN number but I think that site has shut down. Since you did not specify the model year of your car, that is about all I can tell you. If you are unsure of the model year, check the registration or look at the 10th digit of the VIN - it translates the year the car was built.
No, I meant WS9. From 93-97, WS9 was present in both Formulas and Trans Ams would indicate the Formula Model Conversion: the installation of the LT1, the T56 (RPO Codes MM6 and MM6) being the manual transmission instead of the T5, the G80 RPO for the Limited Slip Differential, the GU6 3.42 rear gear ratio for the T56 (excluding the 93 T56 which came with different gearing and a 3.23 rear gear) or GU5 3.23 rear gear ratio for the 700R4 (93) or 4L60E (94-02), and QLC for the 245/50ZR16 tires. W66 was the RPO code for the Formula Merchandise Package (started in 1970 after the Firebird "400"). Basically the base Firebird's body panels and bumpers with the Formula decal on the headlamp cover, doors, and rear bumper. Y82 signified the Trans Am Merchandise Package which featured the different body panels, bumpers, and upgraded interior. Y83 indicated GT equipped Trans Ams in 94. After 94, GT equipment was standard on Trans Ams. Y84 marked Trans Am convertibles. In regards to the WS6, the only 4th Gen Firebirds that had it as an option were from 96-02. The OP's 93 couldn't be ordered with the WS6 Ram Air/Handling Package.
Im try to find what model my pontiac firebird is by the ven#
So what does it mean if the 5 th digit on the vin is a S on a 86 Pontiac firebird. Which has the original 2.8 l v6 5 speed manual trans? I can't figure out what model It is.
If the fifth digit is an S, your car is JUST called a Firebird. It’s a Pontiac Firebird. If you have a W, then it’s a Pontiac Trans Am or a Pontiac Formula. Trans am and formula are just subdivisions of the Firebird.
