Be sure to use NEW bolts, 1)tighten to 40ft/lbs 2)back off 1/2 turn 3)tighten back to 40ft/lbs 4)tighten an additional 90 degrees 5)tighten an additional 90 degrees. Begin in middle, go to ends of head, and back and forth, never two bolts next to each other one after the other / When you tighten then back off, not right then..go to another bolt and around the sequence that way

this is a Ford Escort, with the famous 1.9 liter....these have always had the rickety valve train....at the shop we'd unapologetically use STP to quiet the ticking....don't tell anyone....that was 1994~

Do as DavidH25 suggests - I know, the bolts make funny sounds and it seems wrong to torque Head Bolts this way but it is the proper procedure. The bolts are "Stretch-to-Yield" meaning that they are designed to hold tension at a certain torque - it's also why you shouldn't use them twice.
