Manual override for rear spoiler on 1999 911 Carrera

There's a little switch down in the left footwell right below the fuse box cover that raises and lowers it.

Just bought a 2016 911 carrera 4 what is the purpose of the rear spoiler switch do most of you use it. Also i believe it is automatice based on speed but mine still is in the open position when i turn the car off. Still trying to figure out this car.
