Possibly the ignition switch. These are a known weakness in early 996 and 986. They are cheap and easy to replace, but don't buy the very cheap $10 NAPA unit, get the proper one (I think it is made by Audi).

Hiya - I have a 99 Boxter - Battery area got wet since then dash acting up - dial needles for petrol and temp are crossing over and going from top to bottom ( wrong way around ) and speedo not moving at all - Tbiugh electric speedo works - I had new ECG but still same - any ideas ? Is there some kind of module that could have blown (- roof switch also not working - everything else works fine ??
