1995 Ford Explorer 88k miles

Question type: General

Hey guys, soon going to be investing in my first car.
95 Ford Explorer I'm buying off of a family friend. I
currently am in school and my school is about 3
hours from where I live (roughly 250 miles I believe)
and I make the trip back and forth probably 4-5
times a year. Getting this car in hopes that I won't
have to take the miserable bus ride anymore.
Anyone have any tips or tricks or advice on how to
keep up maintenance? Anyone think I'll have a
problem with this car and that kind of driving? I'm
hoping the car will last me some time.. trying to
remain positive. If anyone has had this car or wants
to share their experience I'd be glad to hear.
Looking for anything as it's my first car.

It all depends on how the vehicle was maintained by your relative. I still have my 96 4.0 OHV explorer turning 300K miles. I rebuilt the transmission once and rebuilt the front suspension twice. The engine still ticks along fine, but I change the oil every 3K miles and do not drive it over 60 or so now.

If the car is going to sit for months you should start it up and drive it around the block until it is fully warm at least once a month. If you have the option use a battery tender to keep the charge up. A solar powered battery tender might help. Also check the tire pressure before a road trip and change the oil at least once a year even if it has only had a few miles on it since the last change. If you live where it is cold make sure the anti-freeze is good. I would go ahead and do a full cooling system service.

We’ve had our 95 Explorer since 2004 or 2005. We got it with 127,000 miles on it. It now has 280,000. Are these original miles? I would be suspicious.
