Have it scanned by a mechanic at a reputable garage. There should be "history" or "pending" codes if its going on and off. Then depending on the codes you'll have a better idea of what to have checked out.

this happened to me; the cylinders were misfiring (). You can have an OReilly's tech confirm that with a code checker (for free), and then buy new cylinder coils for $54 each. The MasterPros have liftetime warranties. OR, go ahead and spend the $80 for the Toyota cylinder coils. Most mechanics will tell you not to use aftermarket parts with the coils;I have had to repeat the replacement process about 4 times over the last 14 months, so it does seem like good advice.

I just had the same experience, and it was a failing oil control valve and worn/dried out evap hoses on my 2001 es 300 with 190,000 miles. It was expensive to repair, but the car is good for another 100k miles!
