whats the average life of a timing belt lexus 2003

When I had 06 RX 400H timing belt changed at 105K miles, I was surprised to see the used belt which looked no different than a new. Is it really necessary to change timing belt? Mercedes and American cars do not ever need to change Belt. I wonder how it and how hard does it work. It does not seem like it gets rubbed around like other engine parts. Its only function is when you start the car. Can anybody explain?
