Car seems to have burned my battery --- drove home parked car -- tried started car later -- would not turn

How old is the battery? If older than 4 or 5 years then it is likely time to replace it. When replacing the battery always check the output of the alternator by taking a simple measurement with a voltmeter. Check the DC voltage at the battery with the engine running. It should be somewhere between 13.5 and 14.7 volts.
