Engine light - Cam Gears

Asked by Lonnie99 Apr 08, 2014 at 10:02 AM about the 2008 Lexus ES 350 FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

120,000 km's; gently driven and well maintained. Engine light on (with other lights too), car
runs and purrs perfectly however. Took it straight to Lexus and was told the timing was off
of the valves and cam gears causing engine to detect error code. Would need to replace
cam gears. Erased codes for now. $4,000.00 to $5,000.00 estimated job when needed.
Hard to imagine that this would be the case for this engine built by Toyota and rated as
one of the most bulllet proof ever made.

Your faith in your car is commendable- but even Toyota is not perfect, especially these days- I would not spend 5 grand based only on a dealer's diagnosis- and if you have that kind of money and love your car that much, you should at least get a second opinion- or even a third- after all, you say the car "runs perfectly"- make the effort to find an independent garage with really good mechanics who regularly work on high-end newer cars like yours-
