Upgrading To LED Or Halogen Headlights, Rewire Needed ??

Does a 1999 Escort ZX2 Hot Coupe require different plugs than OE for upgrading to Halogen or LED headlight assemblies? Are the original electrical couplers the same? Which is better LED or Halogen?
