Summary
The Acura MDX is the best-selling three-row luxury SUV of all time, with solid performances through three generations of production since 2001. While it may not be an industry leader in any one category, the MDX delivers competitive levels of comfort, convenience, and technology and an attractive overall package that has spawned a loyal repeat audience.
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is a competitive compact SUV for buyers looking to satisfy the needs of the typical family. For the 2021 model year, Mazda has enhanced the model’s tech and discontinued the unpopular diesel engine. There’s also a new Kuro Edition for Canadian buyers to choose from. Despite the changes, the highlights and quibbles about the SUV are mostly unchanged from the 2020 model year.

Look and feel
2020 Acura MDX
6/10
2021 Mazda CX-5
9/10

The 2020 Acura MDX presented itself as a well-designed crossover SUV, though its styling was not particularly groundbreaking or attention-grabbing. It blended seamlessly into its surroundings, neither embarrassing nor overly impressing its driver. The MDX featured Acura's signature Jewel Eye LED headlights, which added a touch of sophistication to its front end. The sleek, low-slung design with chiseled details and a fast roofline gave it a modern appearance. Inside, the MDX maintained a simple yet contemporary look, with a centre stack highlighted by twin infotainment screens and a high-quality fit and finish that contributed to a solid and well-built feel.

In contrast, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 took a different design approach, opting for a smooth and sleek appearance that exuded a sense of motion even when stationary. While not flashy, the CX-5's design was stylish and cohesive across its trim levels. The base model featured LED headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a rear roof spoiler, while higher trims added leatherette seats, a power liftgate, and auto-leveling LED headlights. The top-tier Signature model boasted premium features like Caturra Brown Nappa leather seats and genuine wood trim, elevating its interior to rival more luxurious brands. The CX-5's design was well-executed, with good fit and finish, and materials that felt premium for its class.

Performance

The 2020 Acura MDX offered two powertrain options: a 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive, and a Sport Hybrid variant with a 3.0-litre V6 engine and three electric motors, delivering a combined 321 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque. The MDX demonstrated strong straight-line performance and nimble handling, especially with its Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system, which utilized torque-vectoring technology to enhance cornering and stability. The four-wheel independent suspension provided a comfortable ride, making it a suitable choice for long journeys.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 offered two engine options: a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, and a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive available. The turbocharged engine delivered spirited performance, especially in Sport mode, while the CX-5's engaging driving dynamics made it enjoyable to drive. However, the stiff suspension could be a drawback for those seeking a smoother ride. Fuel efficiency varied depending on the drivetrain, with the most efficient model achieving 9.7 L/100 km in the city and 7.8 on the highway.

Form and function

The 2020 Acura MDX provided ample interior space, with sliding and reclining second-row seats for easy access to the third row. It offered 447 litres of cargo space behind the third row, expandable to 1,229 litres with the third row folded, and 2,574 litres with both rear rows down. The MDX featured numerous storage compartments, including a large glove box, a flexible centre console, and door panel pockets. Tri-zone climate control ensured comfort for all passengers, making it a practical choice for families seeking minivan-like functionality without the stigma of sliding doors.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5, while stylish, offered less interior space compared to some competitors. It provided 875 litres of cargo space behind the second row, expanding to 1,687 litres with the rear seats folded. The seating position and comfort level were typical for its class, but rear legroom was limited, especially with taller front-seat occupants. The CX-5 featured straightforward climate controls and a larger shifter that took up passenger space. While it had two full LATCH connections for child seats, the cargo space was below average for the segment, making it less ideal for those needing maximum storage capacity.

Technology

The 2020 Acura MDX came equipped with a range of technology features, including Siri Eyes Free, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a CD/MP3 player. The Technology Package added navigation, premium audio, and parking sensors, while the A-Spec and Technology Plus packages offered additional upgrades like heated and ventilated seats and an upgraded audio system. The Elite Package included advanced features such as a surround-view camera and a rear entertainment system, making the MDX a tech-savvy choice for those seeking a well-equipped SUV.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 featured a standard 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, though its operating system was not as user-friendly as some competitors. While Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, the screen's positioning made it difficult to reach. The lack of tuning knobs for the stereo was a drawback, though volume control was accessible via the steering wheel or centre console. Despite these challenges, the CX-5's infotainment system offered essential connectivity features, but its usability could be improved.

The 2020 Acura MDX was equipped with AcuraWatch, a suite of safety features including adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and automatic emergency braking. The Technology Package added blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The MDX's advanced body structure contributed to its high safety ratings, with the IIHS awarding it "good" ratings in crash tests and the NHTSA giving it a five-star overall safety rating.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 boasted a comprehensive list of standard safety features, such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and forward collision warning. Optional features included a head-up display and a surround-view camera system. The CX-5 earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star rating from the NHTSA, making it a safe choice for families. Mazda's warranty coverage added peace of mind for buyers.
