Summary
If you never drove one along a palm-lined California beach on a warm evening as the sun dips into the sea, it would be easy to dismiss the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible as money foolishly spent. But even though the Corvette Stingray Coupe comes with a removable targa roof panel that stows in the trunk, it can’t quite match the droptop for downright convenience or a thrillingly visceral driving experience. But you’ll give up a few things in exchange.
The Porsche 911 has been the go-to sports car for over 50 years, and for good reason. Its focus on performance has incrementally improved every aspect of this small coupe over the generations. At the same time, that performance is easily approachable and doesn’t get in the way of everyday drivability.

9/10

The 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible, with its striking flying buttresses, offered a distinct visual appeal compared to the Corvette Coupe with its targa roof panel removed. The convertible's power retractable hardtop, which lowered in 18 seconds and raised in 22 seconds, provided a seamless open-air experience without leaving the driver's seat. The open-top driving amplified the engine's roar and exhaust notes, creating an exhilarating auditory experience. However, the convertible's design did compromise rear visibility, making it difficult to spot traffic behind, and rendered the rear camera mirror inoperable when the top was down. Despite these drawbacks, the Corvette Convertible maintained the performance and exotic proportions expected from a mid-engined sports car, with a starting price of $78,398 Canadian for the base 1LT trim.

The 2022 Porsche 911 retained its iconic silhouette, a testament to its evolutionary design since 1963. The 911's rear-engine layout and classic styling were hallmarks of its identity, making it instantly recognizable. The interior combined traditional elements with modern technology, featuring a large analog tachometer and a 10.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. The 911's cabin was well-crafted, with high-quality materials and a focus on driver engagement. While the rear seats were more suited for cargo than passengers, the convertible's fabric top could be operated at speeds up to 50 km/h, enhancing the open-air driving experience. The 911's interior exuded a sense of seriousness, with options available to add a splash of colour, albeit at a premium cost.

The 2021 Chevrolet Corvette, equipped with the optional Z51 Performance Package, delivered an impressive 495 horsepower at 6,450 rpm and 470 pound-feet of torque at 5,150 rpm. This power was harnessed through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, offering a thrilling driving experience. The Corvette's mid-engine layout provided excellent forward visibility and dynamic handling, making it a joy to drive on winding roads. The Z51 Package included performance-tuned Magnetic Ride Control, performance brakes, and a heavy-duty cooling system, ensuring the Corvette was ready for spirited driving. Despite its performance capabilities, the Corvette remained relatively easy to drive daily, with features like a front suspension lift with memory function to prevent nose scraping.

The 2022 Porsche 911, with its iconic horizontally-opposed six-cylinder boxer engine, offered a range of power outputs across its variants. The Carrera GTS model, tested with a PDK transmission, produced 473 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, achieving 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds. The 911's handling was precise, with the ability to corner with confidence and adjust suspension stiffness for varying road conditions. The brakes were effective and easy to modulate, contributing to the 911's reputation as a well-rounded sports car. The 911's performance was complemented by its Sport drive modes, which enhanced engine and transmission response, making it a versatile choice for both spirited and everyday driving.

The cabin offered comfortable seating, with optional sport seats for enhanced lateral support. While the rear seats were limited in space, the front trunk provided 132 litres of cargo capacity. The convertible's fabric top could be operated quickly, and wind noise was well-managed. Interior storage was minimal, but the 911 prioritized driver engagement over practicality, with high-quality materials and a focus on performance.
