Summary | Critically acclaimed and selling well, the 2021 Hyundai Palisade enters its sophomore year with more standard equipment, expanded infotainment capabilities, and a new luxury-themed trim level. The 2021 Palisade lineup includes Essential, Preferred, Luxury, and the new Ultimate Calligraphy trim, with pricing ranging from an MSRP of $41,399 to $54,899 Canadian—not including a destination charge of $1,925. For this review, we evaluated a Palisade Ultimate Calligraphy, which is priced at the top end of that spectrum. | Even in a grim year, Honda is selling a staggering number of CR-Vs. The CR-V is the best-selling Honda in Canada, edging out the home-built Honda Civic. The CR-V is also the second best-selling compact SUV, just behind the Toyota RAV4. And it was the sixth best-selling vehicle in Canada in 2021. So, it’s hard to argue against the CR-V formula. Honda’s been at this almost as long as crossovers have been a thing, launching the CR-V in 1997—a year after the RAV4 debuted. The funny thing is, aside from sales volume, there’s only one thing the CR-V particularly excels at. Aesthetics are subjective, but it would be hard to argue the CR-V is the best-looking vehicle in its class. It’s not the cheapest. It’s not the best equipped, especially at the middle to lower trim levels. It’s not the fastest, nor is it the quietest, or the most fuel efficient. It’s not even the most reliable, showing up nowhere in J.D. Power's Most Reliable list. So, what makes it so appealing to Canadian consumers? Let’s see if we can figure that out. |

The 2021 Hyundai Palisade Ultimate Calligraphy stood out with its distinctive grille pattern, revised exterior lighting, and unique 20-inch alloy wheels. It featured upgraded interior detailing, including a simulated suede headliner, which gave it a luxurious feel. The standard LED headlights added a modern touch to the Palisade's appearance. While opinions on its unconventional styling varied, the Palisade Ultimate Calligraphy was undeniably eye-catching and appeared more expensive than its actual price. Inside, the premium Nappa leather and suede headliner made the cabin feel upscale, offering a sense of luxury that was hard to match in its class.
In contrast, the 2021 Honda CR-V had a more conventional design, similar to many other compact crossovers. Its styling was not a major selling point, as it blended in with the competition. The CR-V offered a few distinguishing features, such as its grille and chromed plastic accents, but overall, it was not a vehicle chosen for its exterior aesthetics. The CR-V came in seven colours, though many were shades of grey, black, or white, with limited availability of more vibrant options. Inside, the CR-V's design was modern, with angular seat details and a choice of materials depending on the trim level. However, it lacked the distinctive styling found in some of its competitors.
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade was equipped with a robust 3.8-litre V6 engine producing 291 horsepower, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive in Canada. It offered multiple driving modes, including Eco, Comfort, Smart, Sport, Snow, and a Lock function for improved traction. The Palisade achieved a fuel efficiency of 11.1 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving. Its suspension provided excellent body-motion control, making it enjoyable to drive, though not particularly sporty. The Palisade's towing capacity was 2,268 kilograms, with a new seven-pin trailer pre-wiring connector for 2021.
The 2021 Honda CR-V featured a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 190 horsepower, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). It offered smooth acceleration and predictable cornering, with a 0-100 km/h time of about 8 seconds. The CR-V's drivetrain was less engaging compared to competitors with conventional transmissions. Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive available on higher trims. The CR-V's suspension setup provided decent handling and ride quality, typical for its class.
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade excelled in interior space and accessibility. It featured eight-way power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front and second-row seats, and a heated steering wheel. The second-row captain's chairs offered ample legroom and slid for easy access to the third row, which was more accommodating than most in its class. The Palisade provided generous in-cabin storage and a hands-free Smart Liftgate. Cargo space measured 509 litres behind the third row, expanding to 2,447 litres with the second and third rows folded.
The 2021 Honda CR-V prioritized functionality, offering more interior volume than the Toyota RAV4. It provided 1,065 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded. The CR-V's tailgate options varied by trim, with a hands-free power tailgate available on higher trims. Roof rails were standard on most trims, enhancing its practicality for carrying additional gear.
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade offered two infotainment systems, with 8-inch and 10.25-inch touchscreen displays. Both supported Bluetooth pairing for two smartphones, but only the 8-inch system offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Ultimate Calligraphy trim included a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, navigation, and other premium features. Additional technology included wireless smartphone charging, a Driver Talk intercom system, and a head-up display.
The 2021 Honda CR-V came standard with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, supporting Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Audio systems varied by trim, with the Touring trim featuring a 300-watt system with a subwoofer. Charging ports were abundant, with wireless phone charging available on the Touring trim. Satellite navigation was offered on higher trims.
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade excelled in safety, with features like adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-keeping systems. It included a rear occupant alert system and active blind-spot monitoring. The Highway Driving Assist system provided adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assistance. The Palisade earned top safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA.
The 2021 Honda CR-V also prioritized safety, earning a five-star NHTSA rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick award. The Honda Sensing system included standard safety features like forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Blind spot monitoring was available on higher trims.
