Summary | Critically acclaimed and selling well, the 2021 Hyundai Palisade enters its sophomore year with more standard equipment, expanded infotainment capabilities, and a new luxury-themed trim level. The 2021 Palisade lineup includes Essential, Preferred, Luxury, and the new Ultimate Calligraphy trim, with pricing ranging from an MSRP of $41,399 to $54,899 Canadian—not including a destination charge of $1,925. For this review, we evaluated a Palisade Ultimate Calligraphy, which is priced at the top end of that spectrum. | Based on the same rugged traditional SUV platform with body-on-frame construction as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 1,322 litres of cargo behind its second-row seat. |

The 2021 Hyundai Palisade Ultimate Calligraphy stood out with its distinctive grille pattern, revised exterior lighting, and unique 20-inch alloy wheels. It featured upgraded interior detailing and a simulated suede headliner, making it appear more luxurious than its price suggested. The standard LED headlights added a modern touch, and the overall design was polarizing, drawing mixed reactions. Inside, the Palisade impressed with quilted Nappa leather and a suede headliner, offering a premium feel that belied its cost.
In contrast, the 2022 Lexus GX retained a design reminiscent of its first-generation model, with the signature spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights being the main distinguishing features. The interior, while not as dated as the exterior, maintained a classic Lexus quality with smooth, refined materials. The cabin was quiet, with the V8 engine's faint roar being the only audible intrusion. The GX's design was more traditional, appealing to those who preferred a timeless look.
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade was equipped with a 3.8-litre V6 engine producing 291 horsepower, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive in Canada. It offered multiple driving modes, including Eco, Comfort, Smart, Sport, Snow, and a Lock function for improved traction. The Palisade achieved a fuel efficiency of 11.1 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving. Its firmer suspension provided excellent body-motion control, making it enjoyable to drive, though not particularly sporty. The Palisade's towing capacity was 2,268 kilograms, with a new seven-pin trailer connector for 2021.
The 2022 Lexus GX featured a 4.6-litre V8 engine with 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and full-time 4WD. Despite its 2,325-kilogram curb weight, the GX managed a 7.8-second run to 60 mph, aided by its torque. The GX's fuel consumption was estimated at 14.5 litres per 100 kilometres, with a real-world result of 14.0 L/100 km. The Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System improved stability, while the GX's off-road capabilities were enhanced by features like Multi-Terrain Select and Panoramic View cameras.
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade offered a spacious and accessible interior, with eight-way power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front and second-row seats, and separate climate controls for the third row. The second-row captain's chairs provided ample legroom and slid for easy access to the third row. The Palisade boasted 509 litres of cargo space behind the third row, expandable to 2,447 litres with all seats folded. The hands-free Smart Liftgate added convenience, though it could be disabled if desired.
The 2022 Lexus GX provided an elevated driving position with a 10-way power-adjustable seat and clear visibility. The interior featured NuLuxe upholstery, black ash wood trim, and triple-zone climate control. However, rear seat access was challenging due to narrow door openings, and the third-row seat was cramped and difficult to access. Cargo space was limited, with 328 litres behind the third row and 1,833 litres with all seats folded. The side-swinging tailgate added to the loading challenges.
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade offered two infotainment systems, with the Ultimate Calligraphy trim featuring a 10.25-inch touchscreen, SiriusXM, HD Radio, navigation, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. Wireless smartphone charging, a Driver Talk intercom, and a Quiet Mode were also included. The head-up display and surround-view camera system enhanced convenience and safety.
The 2022 Lexus GX introduced a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and navigation. The system included a CD player and Lexus Enform connected services with a WiFi hotspot. The stereo controls were awkwardly placed, but the voice recognition technology was excellent. Intuitive Parking Assist and optional surround-view cameras added to the GX's technological offerings.
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade excelled in safety, with features like adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping systems. The rear occupant alert system and Safe Exit Assist added to its safety credentials. The Palisade earned top safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA, providing peace of mind for families.
The 2022 Lexus GX lacked crash-test ratings but offered Lexus Safety System+ with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring and Safety Connect services were also included. However, the GX lacked some advanced safety technologies found in competitors, which could be a drawback for some buyers.
