Summary
Skipping the 2021 model year, the Acura MDX leaps ahead into 2022, riding on a new platform with a new exterior design, new interior look, refreshed platform, and a more assertive attitude. Now entering its fourth generation of production since its introduction as a 2001 model, the MDX rewards its loyal audience with improvements across the board—while retaining its essential nature.
Have you ever found yourself thinking that you’d love to have a new Chevy Camaro but what you really need is a midsize SUV? If so, you’ll want to consider the 2022 Chevrolet Blazer, a Camaro-influenced crossover that seats up to five people and carries up to 1,818 litres of cargo. However, unlike Blazers of yore, the 2022 Blazer is best used on pavement. Generally speaking, though, aside from its sporty styling and overall adequacy, there isn’t much here to titillate a typical SUV buyer. Or Camaro dreamer.

Look and feel
2022 Acura MDX
8/10
2022 Chevrolet Blazer
7/10

The 2022 Acura MDX had a refined and modern exterior design, characterized by its sportier and assertive appearance. Built on a new dedicated platform, the MDX featured a longer wheelbase, wider body, and an increased dash-to-axle distance, enhancing its elegance. The Jewel Eye LED headlights and larger wheels contributed to its contemporary look. Inside, the MDX boasted a spacious cabin with a layered dashboard, authentic materials, and a unique gear selection system. The 12.3-inch infotainment screen, although not a touchscreen, was strategically placed for safety and ease of use. The MDX's interior offered a luxurious feel with various colour options, making it a standout in its class.

In contrast, the 2022 Chevrolet Blazer drew inspiration from the Camaro, presenting a sporty and appealing design. The RS trim, in particular, showcased a sophisticated look with its red interior accents matching the exterior paint. However, the Blazer's styling had a peculiar element with the black trim on the rear bumper, which some found unappealing. Inside, the Blazer featured an 8-inch touchscreen with simple controls and innovative air vents. While the interior had a sporty appearance, it was marred by the use of hard plastics, especially on the upper door panels. Despite this, the Blazer's colour scheme added a touch of sophistication to its overall design.

Performance

2022 Chevrolet Blazer
5/10

The 2022 Acura MDX was powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine, producing 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. It featured a 10-speed automatic transmission and Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), which enhanced cornering feel and control. The MDX's suspension upgrades, including a double-wishbone setup, improved sporty handling and ride quality. The vehicle's overall stiffness and rigidity contributed to a solid ride feel, while the transmission worked seamlessly with the engine. The MDX offered five drive modes, allowing drivers to tailor the driving experience to their preferences. During test drives, the MDX impressed with its performance, feeling closer to the benchmark Audi Q7 and outperforming competitors like the Lexus RX L and Volvo XC90.

The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer offered two engine options: a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 228 horsepower and a 3.6-litre V6 with 308 horsepower. The V6 engine, available on higher trims, provided satisfying acceleration but was criticized for its loudness. The Blazer's nine-speed automatic transmission and driving modes, including Sport and Tow/Haul, catered to different driving conditions. However, the Blazer's performance fell short on back roads, with the suspension and transmission not meeting expectations. The steering in Sport mode felt artificial, and the vehicle struggled in higher-speed curves. Despite these shortcomings, the Blazer was agreeable to drive in typical situations, with decent grip and capable brakes.

Form and function

The 2022 Acura MDX excelled as a versatile three-row SUV, offering comfortable seating for the first two rows and a flexible second row with a removable centre section. The third row, while suitable for smaller passengers, provided additional seating capacity. The MDX's cargo space was impressive, with up to 2,690 litres available when the second and third rows were folded. The power tailgate featured convenient functions like "Walk Away Close" and Hands-Free Access, enhancing usability. Interior lighting was customizable, with 27 themes to choose from, adding to the cabin's ambiance.

The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer provided a comfortable and practical interior, with black leather upholstery and red accents lending a sporty appearance. The front seats offered power adjustment and heating, though they lacked thigh support. The Blazer's dual-zone climate control and rear air vents ensured passenger comfort. The back seat was spacious, with sliding functionality for added cargo or passenger space. Storage options were plentiful, with a large glove compartment and various bins. The Blazer's cargo area measured 864 litres, expanding to 1,818 litres with the rear seats folded, though these figures were smaller compared to other midsize SUVs.

Technology

The 2022 Acura MDX was equipped with advanced technology, including the ELS Studio 3D Premium Audio System with 16 speakers and 710 watts of amplification. The 12.3-inch infotainment system and Acura Precision Cockpit digital instrument panel were standard, offering a customizable and user-friendly experience. Amazon Alexa integration, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto were included, along with a WiFi hotspot and over-the-air updates. The MDX also featured a head-up display and a surround-view camera on higher trims, enhancing convenience and safety.

The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer offered a range of technology features, with an 8-inch touchscreen and simple controls for the infotainment system. The Blazer's dual-zone climate control and rear air vents contributed to passenger comfort. USB ports and a household-style power outlet were available for device charging. The Blazer's power rear liftgate, with hands-free operation on higher trims, provided easy access to the cargo area. However, the success rate of the hands-free feature was inconsistent. Overall, the Blazer's technology offerings were practical but lacked the sophistication of the MDX's advanced systems.

Safety

8/10
2022 Chevrolet Blazer
7/10

The 2022 Acura MDX received top safety ratings, earning a "Top Safety Pick +" from the IIHS. The vehicle's advanced safety structure and high-strength steel construction contributed to its excellent crash protection. The MDX featured a low-speed braking control system, collision mitigation throttle control, and the comprehensive AcuraWatch suite of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and blind spot monitoring.

The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer came standard with the Chevy Safety Assist suite, offering forward-collision alert, pedestrian detection, and lane-keep assist. The Blazer also included a rear-seat reminder system and Teen Driver technology. Available safety upgrades included the Safety Alert Seat, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. However, the Blazer's headlights did not receive high ratings from the IIHS, affecting its overall safety score. Despite this, the Blazer's advanced driving assistance systems were effective and user-friendly.
