Summary
Auto manufacturers are always pursuing younger customers, but some cars appeal to a different clientele. The 2022 Lexus ES attracts the softest of buyers, mature adults seeking a mid-size luxury sedan without a giant price tag. Available with four cylinders, six cylinders, or a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain, the 2022 Lexus ES starts in Canada at $46,200. In the age of the SUV and at the dawn of electrification, the ES does its best to capture any remaining new car buyers interested in a traditional sedan.
The model year 2022 WRX delivers a cocktail of performance and all-weather practicality that remains unmatched at its price point. Although the introduction of Subaru’s 2.4-litre engine doesn’t result in a massive power bump for the WRX, the car still impresses—particularly in the handling department.

The 2022 Lexus ES, a staple in the Lexus lineup, had evolved over seven generations since its debut in 1990. Despite a decline in sales, it remained a popular choice among an older demographic. Lexus faced the challenge of attracting younger buyers without alienating its loyal customer base. The ES, built on the Global Architecture-K platform, offered a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout with optional all-wheel drive. Its design featured elegant proportions, a sleek roofline, and the distinctive Lexus "spindle" grille. The interior, while well-assembled, had an asymmetrical dashboard and sporty F Sport packaging, which added a touch of boldness to the otherwise conservative design.

In contrast, the 2022 Subaru WRX, known for its rally heritage, underwent significant changes. The new model was wider and featured a subtle front end with a signature hood scoop. The side profile was less busy, with black plastic cladding designed to improve aerodynamics. The rear fenders flared outward, and the taillights had a multifaceted design. Inside, the WRX saw improvements in fit and finish, with a D-shaped steering wheel, aluminum-alloy pedal covers, and carbon-fibre-pattern trim accents. The WRX's interior finally matched its modern stablemates, offering a more refined and comfortable driving experience.

The 2022 Lexus ES offered three models with distinct powertrains. The ES 250 AWD featured a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, achieving a 0-60 mph time of 8.6 seconds. The ES 350, with a 3.5-litre V6 engine, delivered 307 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque, reaching 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds. The ES 300h hybrid combined a 176-hp four-cylinder engine with a 39-hp electric motor for a net 215 hp, achieving a 0-60 mph time of 8.1 seconds. The ES 250 AWD provided a smooth and predictable ride, but its performance felt underwhelming for a luxury sedan.

The 2022 Subaru WRX, powered by a 2.4-litre turbocharged Boxer engine, produced 271 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. While the power improvement was minimal compared to the previous generation, the WRX's all-wheel-drive system and six-speed manual transmission provided an engaging driving experience. The CVT option offered faster shift points, but the manual transmission was preferred by most buyers. The WRX's suspension, mounted on the Subaru Global Platform, delivered a forgiving ride quality, even on rough roads, making it a capable performer in various driving conditions.

The 2022 Lexus ES offered a generous 394 litres of cargo space, with a pass-through for long items and fold-flat rear seats for additional storage. The sedan's lower centre of gravity and ground clearance contributed to better handling and fuel economy compared to SUVs. Inside, the ES featured heated, ventilated, and power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone climate control, and ample storage options, making it a practical and comfortable choice for luxury sedan buyers.

The 2022 Subaru WRX, with a cargo capacity of 354 litres, offered a 60/40 split-fold function for the rear seats, enhancing its practicality. The sport seats were comfortable and supportive, with various upholstery options available. The WRX's standard all-wheel drive and comfortable interior made it a viable commuter vehicle, appealing to those seeking a performance-focused sedan with practicality.

The Lexus Enform suite provided connected services, including Safety Connect, Service Connect, and Remote Connect, enhancing the vehicle's technological appeal.

The 2022 Subaru WRX featured an 11.6-inch tablet-style multimedia touchscreen display in Sport trims and higher, with physical controls for essential functions. The system supported Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though the latter's integration was less seamless. This suite included features like pre-collision detection, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. The ES's safety features contributed to its reputation as a secure and reliable luxury sedan.

The 2022 Subaru WRX's safety features varied by transmission. CVT-equipped models came with Subaru's EyeSight suite, offering advanced driver assistance systems like automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. Manual transmission models lacked EyeSight but included blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert on higher trims.
