2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional SUV platform with body-on-frame construction as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 1,322 litres of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2023 Cadillac XT5 Reviews Summary

The Cadillac XT5 compact luxury SUV offers plenty of the luxury experience for less money and fuss than some of its competitors. Even so, this crossover lacks the driving excitement and engagement that the Europeans offer, and it can’t match the style and tech of the Korean and Japanese brands. If it were our only choice, there’d be little to complain about, but when there are so many other great options in the same segment—including the Lincoln Nautilus, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Genesis GV70, and Porsche Macan—the Cadillac loses some of its shine.

Look and feel
2022 Lexus GX
4/10
2023 Cadillac XT5
6/10

The 2022 Lexus GX retained a design that was reminiscent of its first-generation model from 2002, with the signature spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights being the most notable updates. Inside, the cabin was crafted with the high-quality materials and refinement that Lexus was known for, providing a quiet and comfortable environment for passengers. Despite its dated appearance, the GX's interior offered a sense of luxury with its smooth finishes and attention to detail.

In contrast, the 2023 Cadillac XT5 aimed to deliver affordable luxury but fell short in some areas. The cabin, while spacious and intuitively laid out, featured materials that seemed more fitting for a Buick or a high-end Chevrolet. However, the XT5 made up for these shortcomings with its generous cargo space and practical design. The interior offered good headroom and legroom, and the availability of a panoramic sunroof added to the airy feel of the cabin. The XT5's use of physical controls over touch interfaces was a nod to user-friendly design, even if it made the cabin feel slightly dated.

Performance
2022 Lexus GX
6/10
2023 Cadillac XT5
6/10

The 2022 Lexus GX was powered by a 4.6-litre V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a full-time 4WD system, allowed the GX to tow up to 2,948 kilograms. Despite its hefty curb weight of 2,325 kilograms, the GX managed a 0 to 60 mph time of 7.8 seconds. However, its fuel consumption was high, with a combined estimate of 14.5 litres per 100 kilometres. The GX's Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) improved its off-road capabilities and on-road stability, though the steering and brake pedal left room for improvement.

The 2023 Cadillac XT5 offered a choice between a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 235 horsepower and a 3.6-litre V6 engine producing 310 horsepower. The XT5's nine-speed automatic transmission and available AWD provided decent handling, though the ride quality suffered on rough roads. The XT5's performance was overshadowed by competitors like the Porsche Macan and BMW X3, which offered more power and refinement. Fuel economy for the XT5 was competitive, with the turbo-four achieving 9.7 litres per 100 kilometres combined, while the V6 with AWD managed 11.5 litres per 100 kilometres.

Form and function
2022 Lexus GX
2/10
2023 Cadillac XT5
7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX offered an elevated driving position and clear visibility, but its narrow width and short length made it challenging to maneuver in tight spaces. The interior featured comfortable seating and physical controls, though some switchgear was outdated. The GX's third-row seat was cramped and difficult to access, reducing cargo space when in use. The side-swinging tailgate further complicated loading, with a maximum cargo capacity of 1,833 litres when the second-row seats were folded.

The 2023 Cadillac XT5 provided ample storage solutions and a user-friendly layout. The cargo area was easily accessible, with a wide liftgate opening and a low load floor. The XT5 offered 850 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,784 litres with the seats folded. This made it one of the more spacious options in its class, surpassing rivals like the Porsche Macan and Genesis GV70 in cargo capacity.

Technology
2022 Lexus GX
4/10
2023 Cadillac XT5
7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, offering Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and navigation. The system was a significant improvement over previous models, though the placement of stereo controls was less than ideal. The GX also included a CD player and Lexus Enform connected services, providing a mix of modern and nostalgic features.

The 2023 Cadillac XT5's CUE infotainment system was intuitive and responsive, with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. The system allowed for interaction via a rotary controller, voice commands, or the touchscreen. Cadillac retained physical controls for climate and steering wheel functions, enhancing usability. The XT5 also offered a Bose premium audio system and wireless charging, making it competitive in its segment.

Safety
2022 Lexus GX
4/10
2023 Cadillac XT5
7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX lacked crash-test ratings but included Lexus Safety System+ with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Additional features like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were standard, though more advanced technologies were absent.

The 2023 Cadillac XT5 received "Good" scores in crash tests but missed a Top Safety Pick award due to its "Marginal" headlight rating. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a vibrating safety alert seat. Higher trims offered adaptive cruise control and enhanced emergency braking, providing a comprehensive suite of safety technologies.
