Summary
Based on the same rugged traditional SUV platform with body-on-frame construction as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 1,322 litres of cargo behind its second-row seat.

The evolution of the Dodge Durango exemplifies how the Stellantis brand has evolved from a mainstream competitor to Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, and Toyota into a niche brand emphasizing muscle-car attitude.

The Durango was Dodge's first modern SUV, arriving for the 1998 model year as the brand's entry into the midsize SUV segment. The current, third-generation Durango dates all the way back to the 2011 model year. But, as Dodge has found with the Challenger coupe and Charger sedan, a vehicle's lifespan can be greatly extended with an added dose of horsepower.

The 2023 Dodge Durango lineup starts with the base SXT trim level and moves up through the GT, R/T, Citadel, and SRT 392. Changes for 2023 for Canada include standard heated front seats and heated steering wheel and some new colours (bringing the total colour palette to nine).

However, the big news for 2023 is the return of the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat and its devilish supercharged V8 engine. The Hellcat was previously available only for the 2021 model year as a limited edition, but now it's a regular production model. That being the case, the Hellcat ended up as our test vehicle for this Dodge Durango review.

2023 Dodge Durango
9/10

The 2022 Lexus GX retained a classic design that harkened back to its first-generation model from 2002, with only subtle updates like the signature spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights distinguishing it from its predecessors. Inside, the cabin was a testament to Lexus's commitment to quality, offering a refined and quiet environment, with the faint hum of the V8 engine being the only notable sound. The interior design, while reminiscent of earlier models, was crafted with care, featuring high-quality materials and a sense of luxury that Lexus was known for. The GX was available in Standard, Premium, and Executive trims, with prices ranging from $72,100 to $83,750, excluding destination charges.

In contrast, the 2023 Dodge Durango presented a more modern and sleek appearance, avoiding the trend of oversized grilles and opting for a clean, car-like styling. The Durango's design was accentuated by slim styling and forward-leaning headlights, with the signature "racetrack" taillights adding a distinctive touch. The SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat models featured unique styling elements, such as a Viper-like hood and dual exhaust outlets, while the Blacktop and Hemi Orange appearance packages offered additional customization options. Inside, the Durango's interior was comfortable and well-appointed, with materials suited to various trim levels, and luxurious features like Nappa leather upholstery available on higher trims.

Performance

The 2022 Lexus GX was powered by a 4.6-litre V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. Despite its hefty curb weight of 2,325 kilograms, the GX managed a 0 to 60 mph time of 7.8 seconds, aided by its torque delivery at 3,500 rpm. The GX's full-time 4WD system, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, provided a balanced power distribution, while the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) enhanced stability and off-road capability. However, the GX's fuel consumption was high, with an estimated 14.5 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving, and its steering and braking left room for improvement.

The 2023 Dodge Durango offered a range of powertrains, starting with a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine producing up to 295 horsepower. The 5.7-litre Hemi V8, standard on the R/T trim, delivered 360 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque, while the SRT 392's 6.4-litre V8 offered 475 horsepower. The pinnacle of performance was the SRT Hellcat's 6.2-litre supercharged V8, generating 710 horsepower and achieving a 0 to 100 km/h time of approximately 3.5 seconds. The Durango's performance was complemented by an adaptive-damping suspension, Pirelli P Zero tires, and Brembo brakes, providing a thrilling driving experience despite its size.

Form and function

The 2022 Lexus GX offered an elevated driving position and clear visibility, with a comfortable interior featuring physical controls and NuLuxe upholstery in the Black Line Special Edition. However, the GX's narrow width and short length made rear seat access challenging, and the third-row seat was cramped and reduced cargo space. The side-swinging tailgate further complicated loading, with limited cargo capacity of 328 litres behind the third row and 1,833 litres with all seats folded.

The 2023 Dodge Durango provided flexible seating configurations, with options for second-row captain's chairs and generous interior space across all three rows. While cargo space was less than some competitors, the Durango offered 487 litres with all seats in place and up to 2,409 litres with the first row folded. The Durango excelled in towing capacity, with V6 models capable of towing 2,812 kilograms and V8 models up to 3,946 kilograms, though it lacked off-road emphasis.

Technology

The 2022 Lexus GX featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and navigation, eliminating the need for the outdated Remote Touch Interface. The system offered a dual-screen view and excellent voice recognition, though the placement of stereo controls was less intuitive. Standard Intuitive Parking Assist and optional surround-view cameras enhanced convenience.

The 2023 Dodge Durango's lower trims came with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, while higher trims featured a 10.1-inch screen with Uconnect 5. The system was responsive and user-friendly, with unique SRT Easter Eggs and Performance Pages for performance models. A 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system was available on higher trims, enhancing the audio experience.

Safety

The 2022 Lexus GX lacked crash-test ratings but included Lexus Safety System+ with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and other features. However, it missed some advanced safety technologies found in competitors, which could be a drawback for some buyers.

The 2023 Dodge Durango received mixed safety ratings, with a four-star overall rating from NHTSA and a "Marginal" score in the IIHS driver-side small overlap front test. Standard safety features included blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, with additional technologies available on higher trims.
