Summary

The SUV that’s now known as the GLS was launched for the 2007 model year as the GL-Class, when Mercedes decided it needed a bigger, more luxurious SUV to sit above the M-Class in its lineup. The GL-Class and M-Class were rebadged the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and GLE-Class, respectively, in 2014 when Mercedes introduced a new naming scheme across its lineup.

The current version of the GLS was introduced for the 2020 model year, and represents the model’s third generation. It’s aimed at other full-size luxury SUVs, including the BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, Land Rover Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator, and Lexus LX.

Four models are available in Canada: the base six-cylinder GLS 450 4Matic, the GLS 580 4Matic, the AMG GLS 63 4Matic+, and the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4Matic. Availability is currently limited, and specifications for the 2022 model year are not available. However, they are expected to be very close to those listed for 2021, which were used as reference for the information provided here. We tested a U.S.-specification 2022 GLS 450 for this review.

There is a reason that Ford’s Lincoln luxury division emphasizes the ethos of “Quiet Flight” when discussing its products, and our 2023 Aviator Grand Touring proved itself the epitome of this concept. It quietly glides everywhere you go, swaddling you in comfort, luxury, and high-tech features. And Lincoln hasn’t altered this formula for the new model year. (Note the unit shown in this review is in US specification with Black Label packaging, which is not available in Canada.)

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS presented a more understated and refined appearance compared to its flashier competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. Mercedes confidently avoided the ostentatious grilles seen on models like the BMW X7, opting for a more subtle design. However, for those seeking a bit more flair, the AMG GLS 63 performance model offered enhanced visual drama with features like flared wheel arches and a muscular grille. The Maybach version took luxury to another level with chrome accents and a traditional hood ornament, offering a more opulent aesthetic. Inside, the GLS maintained a luxurious feel with leather upholstery, a panoramic roof, and ambient lighting, even in its more basic configurations. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen were seamlessly integrated, providing a modern and high-quality interior experience.

In contrast, the 2023 Lincoln Aviator aimed to impress with its modern design and luxurious features. The Aviator Grand Touring model, in particular, combined a twin-turbo V6 with a hybrid system, offering a powerful yet efficient driving experience. The exterior design was highlighted by the Lincoln Embrace lighting sequence and electric, light-touch door handles, which added a touch of sophistication. Inside, the Aviator boasted a lavish cabin with patterned metal trim, chrome accents, and a simulated suede headliner. The 30-way Perfect Position front seats provided exceptional comfort, while the second-row captain’s chairs offered ample space and support. However, the third row was less accommodating for adults, and the overall interior design leaned towards a more complex aesthetic.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 was equipped with a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, producing 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The engine was complemented by the Mercedes EQ Boost mild-hybrid system, which added 21 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque in short bursts. This setup provided ample power for the large SUV, and the inline-six engine offered a smoother experience compared to traditional V6 engines. The GLS also featured a standard air suspension, which could adjust the ride height and absorb impacts from rough roads. However, the suspension exhibited poor body control, leading to excessive motion over bumps and in corners. The GLS 450 had a towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms, which was competitive but slightly lower than some rivals.

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring, as a plug-in hybrid, delivered impressive performance with a combined output of 494 horsepower and 630 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid system allowed for 34 kilometres of electric driving range, with a combined fuel economy of 10.3 litres per 100 kilometres in hybrid mode. The Aviator offered multiple driving modes, including Pure EV and Preserve EV, to optimize efficiency. During testing, the Aviator demonstrated its ability to cover significant distances on electric power alone, achieving a fuel economy equivalent to 1.4 L/100 km during electric driving. The Aviator’s handling was enhanced by the available Dynamic Handling Package, which provided a smooth and controlled ride. However, the drivetrain occasionally exhibited unpredictable behaviour, and the brake pedal required careful modulation for smooth stops.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a spacious interior with a standard seven-seat configuration, featuring a 60/40 split-folding second-row bench seat and two third-row seats. An optional six-seat version replaced the bench with individual captain’s chairs. The second-row seats could slide forward to provide access to the third row, and the GLS boasted excellent legroom, thanks to its long wheelbase. Cargo space was generous, with 355 litres available with all seats in place and up to 2,400 litres with the second and third rows folded. The GLS also featured one-touch power-folding seats and a power tailgate for added convenience.

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator prioritized comfort with features like a four-zone automatic climate control system, heated and ventilated seats, and massaging front seats. The second-row captain’s chairs were spacious and supportive, but the third row was less accommodating for adults, with limited legroom and a flat seat cushion. Cargo space was somewhat limited with the third row in use, offering 519 litres, but expanded to 1,183 litres with the third row folded. Maximum cargo capacity was 2,200 litres, providing ample space for larger loads.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS came equipped with the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, featuring a 12.3-inch touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, and navigation. The system offered multiple input methods, including voice recognition, a touchpad controller, and steering wheel touchpads. The voice recognition system was particularly effective, allowing for easy control without taking hands off the wheel. However, the touchpad controller was overly sensitive and challenging to use. The GLS also featured an augmented-reality navigation system, although it occasionally suggested inefficient routes.

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring was loaded with technology, including a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and navigation. However, it ran on the older Sync 3 software, which struggled with voice recognition and provided outdated point-of-interest data. The Aviator also featured a 28-speaker Revel Ultima 3D audio system, wireless charging, and the optional Phone As A Key digital key system. The digital instrumentation and head-up display were clear and easy to read, even with polarized sunglasses. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a comprehensive suite of standard safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and Pre Safe, which prepared the vehicle for a potential collision. However, advanced driver-assistance features like adaptive cruise control and a surround-view camera system were optional. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were not available at the time of publication.

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator was equipped with a range of safety features, including automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The Aviator also featured blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and lane-centring assist. The driver-assistance systems performed well on straight highways but were less reliable in heavy traffic or on curvy roads. The Aviator received a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA.
