2022 Volvo XC40 Reviews Summary

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge AWD is an all-electric version of the XC40 subcompact crossover SUV. The Recharge was launched for the 2021 model year, so it doesn't get any significant changes for 2022. It comes with standard all-wheel drive (AWD; front-wheel drive is not offered in our market), and Natural Resources Canada says this plug-in electric vehicle can go up to 359 kilometres on a single charge. Is this the breakthrough EV we’ve been waiting for?

2023 Dodge Durango Reviews Summary

The evolution of the Dodge Durango exemplifies how the Stellantis brand has evolved from a mainstream competitor to Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, and Toyota into a niche brand emphasizing muscle-car attitude.

The Durango was Dodge's first modern SUV, arriving for the 1998 model year as the brand's entry into the midsize SUV segment. The current, third-generation Durango dates all the way back to the 2011 model year. But, as Dodge has found with the Challenger coupe and Charger sedan, a vehicle's lifespan can be greatly extended with an added dose of horsepower.

The 2023 Dodge Durango lineup starts with the base SXT trim level and moves up through the GT, R/T, Citadel, and SRT 392. Changes for 2023 for Canada include standard heated front seats and heated steering wheel and some new colours (bringing the total colour palette to nine).

However, the big news for 2023 is the return of the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat and its devilish supercharged V8 engine. The Hellcat was previously available only for the 2021 model year as a limited edition, but now it's a regular production model. That being the case, the Hellcat ended up as our test vehicle for this Dodge Durango review.

Look and feel
2022 Volvo XC40
9/10
2023 Dodge Durango
9/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge adhered closely to traditional automotive design, making it a familiar sight for those transitioning from internal-combustion engines to electric vehicles. Its exterior closely resembled the gasoline version of the XC40, with subtle differences like a solid panel in the grill, enlarged fuel-filler flap for the charge port, and the absence of tailpipes. The SUV's design was marked by its Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights and a floating roof illusion created by thin pillars. Inside, the XC40 boasted a Scandinavian design sensibility, offering an airy and roomy cabin despite its compact size. The harmonious dash elements and premium finishes underscored Volvo's steady move into the luxury SUV category.

In contrast, the 2023 Dodge Durango maintained its familiar design without a major redesign for over a decade. It featured clean, car-like styling with slim grilles and distinctive “racetrack” taillights. The SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat models had unique styling cues like a Viper-like hood and specific wheels, but these were subtle. The Durango offered various appearance packages, including the Blacktop and Hemi Orange packages, allowing for customization. Inside, the Durango provided a comfortable environment with materials suited to its price point, and higher trims offered luxurious features like Nappa leather upholstery and heated seats. The interior, while not as distinctive as the exterior, was functional and well-equipped.

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was powered by a 78-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, driving two electric motors for all-wheel drive. It delivered 402 horsepower and 486 pound-feet of torque, achieving 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. The gasoline XC40 models, T4 and T5, used turbo four-cylinder engines with 8-speed automatic transmissions, offering 0-100 km/h times of 8.5 and 6.4 seconds, respectively. The Recharge featured regenerative braking and a one-pedal drive option, enhancing energy efficiency. Its lower centre of gravity improved handling, and it had a range of 359 kilometres on a full charge, with fast-charging capabilities.

The 2023 Dodge Durango offered a range of powertrains, starting with a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine producing 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The 5.7-litre Hemi V8, standard on the R/T, delivered 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. The SRT 392 model featured a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 with 475 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. The SRT Hellcat model boasted a 6.2-litre supercharged V8 with 710 hp and 645 lb-ft of torque, reaching 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. Despite its size, the Durango Hellcat offered thrilling acceleration and a dynamic driving experience, supported by adaptive-damping suspension and Brembo brakes.

The XC40 Recharge provided up to 1,628 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded and had a towing capacity of 907 kilograms.

The 2023 Dodge Durango offered seven-seat or six-seat configurations, with generous interior space comparable to other midsize SUVs. It provided 487 litres of cargo space with all seats in place, expanding to 2,409 litres with the second and third rows folded. The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was equipped with advanced technology, including Pilot Assist for highway driving and a heat pump to extend range. It featured a 9.3-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital instrument panel with Android Automotive OS, offering Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play integration. The infotainment system supported over-the-air updates, though the range display relied on a percentage of charge, which could cause range anxiety.

The 2023 Dodge Durango offered an 8.4-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen with Uconnect infotainment. The larger screen featured Uconnect 5, providing a responsive and user-friendly experience. SRT models included performance-focused features like the Performance Pages app, displaying performance metrics. A 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system was available on higher trims, enhancing the audio experience.
