Summary

Do you remember when pickup trucks were used only by construction workers and gardeners? They were work machines, meant to have scratched beds, a cab full of McDonald’s wrappers, and a big dent on the tailgate from an unfortunate run-in with a telephone pole.

Not anymore. Today’s trucks give luxury vehicles a run for their money, with fancy features and ridiculous amounts of technology. Today we’re looking at the 2023 Ram 1500. This truck hasn’t gotten a major update since 2019, and while it still holds its own next to the offerings from Ford, Chevrolet and Toyota, the others are catching up quickly.

With the all-new 2023 Colorado, Chevy focuses on what people typically want in a truck. That’s why it comes only in a crew-cab, short-bed configuration, and most of the trim levels are off-road-oriented. A turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain supplies plenty of power, and even the base Work Truck trim level has modern instrumentation, infotainment, connectivity, and safety technologies. Robustly engineered, the new Colorado also supplies impressive payload and towing capacities, at 833 kilograms (1,836 pounds) and 3,492 kilograms (7,700 pounds), respectively. Good looks round out an impressive overall package.

The 2023 RAM 1500 was a full-size truck available in both quad cab and larger crew cab configurations, with bed lengths of either 6-foot, 4-inch or 5-foot, 7-inch. The Limited trim, which was near the top of the eight available trims, offered a luxurious experience with its $3,895 Night Edition package, featuring a stealthy look with 22-inch black aluminum wheels. Inside, the Limited trim was adorned with leather, contrasting stitching, and open-pore wood on the dash, creating an upscale atmosphere. The 12-inch portrait-oriented screen added a unique touch to the interior, complemented by chunky volume controls and a Ram logo on the dash.

In contrast, the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado Trail Boss was designed for off-road adventures, featuring a factory suspension lift, box-flared fenders, and a blacked-out look. The styling was well-balanced, with hints of Camaro evident in the dashboard toggle switches and air vents. However, the base Work Truck (WT) and Trail Boss trims had a grey front fascia and a less appealing interior. The Trail Boss trim included a front skid plate, while the interior was dominated by plastic surfaces with minimal colour contrast. The Colorado offered a range of trims, with the Trail Boss being equipped with a spray-on bedliner and several convenience packages, bringing its MSRP to $50,844.

The 2023 RAM 1500 offered a variety of engine options, including a 3.6-litre V6 with eTorque, a 5.7-litre Hemi V8, and a 3.0-litre EcoDiesel engine. The TRX trim featured a supercharged 6.2-litre V8, producing 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. All engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The eTorque system provided better fuel economy and extra power, with the V8 delivering 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. The RAM 1500 excelled in towing, with a maximum capacity of 5,783 kilograms and a payload of up to 1,043 kilograms. The truck's coilover suspension and available air suspension ensured a smooth ride, while the 14.9-inch brake rotors provided confident stopping power.

The 2023 Chevrolet Colorado was powered by a turbocharged 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine, with power outputs varying by trim. The WT and LT trims produced 237 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, while the Trail Boss and Z71 offered 310 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. The ZR2 trim matched the 310-hp rating but boasted 430 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission was standard, with the Trail Boss and ZR2 featuring a two-speed transfer case. The Trail Boss had a 5-cm suspension lift and all-terrain tires, making it capable off-road. The Colorado offered five driving modes, including a Baja mode exclusive to the ZR2. Despite its off-road prowess, the Trail Boss was quiet on pavement, with a robust suspension and structural rigidity. However, its fuel economy was disappointing, averaging 13.8 L/100 km during testing.

The 2023 RAM 1500 boasted a plethora of storage options, including a two-tiered centre console and a spacious cabin with heated and cooled front seats. The crew cab configuration provided ample rear legroom of 1,148 millimetres, with reclining rear seats and a flat floor for easy cargo loading. The multifunction tailgate and RamBox storage added to its practicality, making it a versatile choice for those needing extra storage space.

The 2023 Chevrolet Colorado Trail Boss offered comfortable seating for four, with a power driver's seat and standard cloth upholstery. The back seat provided adequate headroom and legroom, with rear air conditioning vents for added comfort. However, storage space was limited, with small door panel trays and a narrow centre armrest compartment. The cargo bed measured 1,186 litres, with an EZ-Lift and Lower tailgate and a StowFlex storage panel for added convenience. The Mid-Position tailgate feature allowed for carrying long items, supporting up to 225 kilograms.

The 2023 RAM 1500 featured a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Uconnect, offering the ability to run two functions simultaneously. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were included, though there was some lag with the former. The optional Equipment Group 1 added a head-up display, digital rearview mirror, and surround-view camera system. Multiple USB outlets, a wireless charging pad, and 115-volt outlets ensured connectivity for all devices.

The 2023 Chevrolet Colorado came equipped with digital instrumentation and an 11.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Google Built-in technology. The system supported wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The Trail Boss's interior featured two digital screens, adding a touch of sophistication. The infotainment system offered real-time off-roading data and trailer-towing technology, including high-definition cameras for easier hitching.

The 2023 RAM 1500 lacked standard advanced driver-assist systems, with features like forward collision warning and blind-spot monitoring being optional. Despite this, the NHTSA awarded it a five-star overall safety rating, while the IIHS gave it Good marks, except for Marginal grades for seat belt reminders and LATCH ease of use.

The 2023 Chevrolet Colorado boasted an impressive list of standard safety features, including Chevy Safety Assist with forward collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. Optional features included adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring. However, the forward-collision warning system was prone to false alerts, causing frustration during testing.
