Yes. The Mazda RX line all have rotaries. The RX-7 had a bigger rotary though, possibly even twin rotors.
the 96' rx-7 had a 1.3 liter wankel rotary engine that had dual rotors. the rx-8 has a 1.3 liter renesis rotary engine which also has two rotors, but the renesis engine was designed to incorporate old wankel engine with more power and put it into a smaller more fuel efficient design
From about 1984 in....maybe 1985, all the RX-7s had a 13b engine which was a 1.3L Rotary. 1st Generation RX-7s (1978-1985) had a 12a motor, except I believe the last year or two they made them they put the 13b in it. -all were naturally aspirated from factory as far as I know, never heard of a stock turboed 1st gen 2nd Gens (1986-1991, 92s were all leftovers of the 91s, none were produced for 92) came in several options, all still using the 13b, I know more of them cause I currently own 2, the base model, GTU, GTUs, GXL, and convertable were all naturally aspirated, and the Turbo II came stock turboed 3rd Gens (1993-1999?, they were continued till 2003 or so in Japan) also had the 13b but so far a I can tell all came stock with a twin turbo, I have yet to see or read about one that didn't

13b renesis motor also having more power than the old 13b's it also has the intake ports moved for better fuel economy. the a and b after the number as far as i can tell means either carurated(a) or fuel injected(b). the number in front of the letter is how many liters the engine has. so a 13b is a 1.3 liter fuel injected engine. if you are lucky enough to find a 20b out of a mazda cosmo it is a 2.0 liter fuel injected sequential twin turbo :) 1st gen 7's have 12a engines for the most part the gsl-se model in 84-85 had a 13b 2nd gen 7's have 13b engines some with a turbo 3rd gen 7's have 13b engines with the option of a turbo or twin sequential turbos 1st gen 8's have 13b with no turbo availible stock
ILl give u a simple answer...yes it does, but the RX8 is naturally aspirated and the FD RX7 is twin turboed. Plus the RX8 has a variable geometry intake, a side intake port, and other modifications that give it much higher NA power than the RX7s, but yes, any Mazda with RX in it will guarenteed have a rotary under the hood (RX=Rotary Experimental).
Actually anonymous dude is wrong. The rx-7s had a 1.3 L twin turbo option which put out more HP then the rx-8 but the rx-8 has a larger 2.0 L naturally aspirated engine
I believe the 3 rotor has never been sold in a production rx7 or rx8 and has only been an aftermarket swap.
Actually the 20B tri-rotor is the the only 2.0L RE block and it only came in the japanese Cosmo's I know because i have one in my 88 RX7 :)

wow... lots of WAY wrong answers, check out rx7club.com to read up, hell, wikipedia is more correct than most of the people here. 79-83, all carb'd 1.1L two rotor motors, known as 12a's 84/85, all models but the top of the line GSL-SE came with the same 12a as from 79-83, the GSL-SE had a 4 port, two rotor 1.3L 13B 86-91, all models but the TurboII models had a 6 port, 2 rotor, 1.3L 13B, the TurboII models were turbo 4 port, two rotor, 1.3L 13B 92-95 (02 in Japan and Australia) all models had twin sequential turbos on a 1.3L, 2 rotor, 13B RX8, all came with a naturally aspirated, 1.3L, 2 Rotor, this was known as the renesis, where as the old ones were wankels, the name change was to designate a different port job that helped produced similar power as the 93-02 models, without the aid of turbos. the 3 rotor (20B) is a 2.0L motor from the Eunos Cosmo in Japan, it is VERY expensive and VERY labor intesive to swap one in, only recommended for pro's or take it to a shop, expect at MINIMUM 15 thousand dollars to do this, not including labor. not all RX designated cars have rotaries in them any more, a fair number of people have put V8s in them, 1 and 2 JZ (supra and similar) motor swaps are becoming more common, as well as various other types of swaps
All Fd 3rd generation Rx-7's had sequential twin turbos.

Kyle was about the closest of all of them although even he had a few minor errors. 84-85 13b was a 6 port EFI engine. 13b 4 ports were from the early 70's in the Rx-2-3-4 The Rx-8 was available with a 13b 4 port (auto) or a 13b 6 port (6 speed) Anyone that swaps a Piston engine into their Rex must change the name to Px-7 or Px-8
Ah, the old Rotary eXperimental gag, it still cracks me up... RX actually means Rotary eXport, the earlier Mazda rotary engined cars were designed only for sale in Japan and didn't comply to the regulations of some other regions (notably the emissions standards as set in California). RX models were aimed at the much larger global market and were a compromise between power, handling, comfort and emissions...
I am looking for a mazda rx7 and was wondering if i can add a 3rd rotor to it or do i have to get a 3 rotor that was build that way if you know what i mean?
Oh Boy , alot of umm miss information up there , Lets start with the Original Post . The all RX models come with rotary engines , RX stands for rotary sports . So it'd be an MX 7 if It didnt have a rotary engine in it . they All come in 1.3 Liter trim . since I believe 85 , Some changes were made between the years , Higher compression rotors , different housing materials , BUT the displacement has remained the same at 1.3 all the RX models came with 2 rotors , Now ALL of the FD , which is the 1993 - to 2002 Models ( in japan they came out in 92) came twin turbo charged , Sequential twins so you had one turbo working from 0-4500 RPM , then the secondary turbo kicked in and you had the two running in parallel until 8000 , The Older FC ( second generation rx7 ) Comes in either Naturally aspirated , Or turbo charged Version with a SINGLE turbo no running in sequentials like the FD did Finally The RX8 Came with a renesis motor , which although it remains the same 1.3 displacement Many things were changed , for this motor , Most significantly is the fact that this motor had SIDE exhaust ports , while the older 13b's have peripherial exhaust ports , Now what does this mean in laymans terms , This means that hte RX8 ran without any kind of over lap , even though it had pretty agressive porting (porting is what works as cams for a rotary ) This let it pass emissions and such . But it did limit power potential of the motor , An older 13b you could port the heck out of it , and port the peripherial exhaust and it would make alot of power naturally aspirated , at the cost of polar bears future ofcourse . and as for the question regarding 3 rotors , THis is not a swap for the feint of heart or money . 3 rotors are different , they require a different eccentric shaft , and a special center housing , along with many many many custom made parts in order to fit everything and get everything to work . Yes they still USE the same Housings as the Third generation RX7
The 3rd-gen RX-7 (92-02) had a twin-turbo 1.3L twin-rotor engine. It made anywhere between 250hp to 300hp depending on the model and where it was sold. The current RX-8 has a naturally aspirated (non turbo) 1.3L twin-rotor engine. It makes 240hp approx. but with much less torque than the RX-7. Hope this answers your question.
Paul is right on the money except for 1 small error. only the high end RX7 FCs and FDs came with the twin turbo. the lower end RX7s (the more common one on the market) came naturally aspirated.
actually the fc was not twin turboed only the ordered fd's the fc had a single turbo only producing 205 hp stock
