First off, you should try to check a couple of shops in your area. You can save a couple hundred bucks by choosing one shop over another. Also, normallly you have the water pump replaced, as well as most of the serpentine belts replaced at the same time. When I took my 1996 3.2TL to get it's timing belt replaced about 4-5years ago, I found a shop close to my house that had good customer reviews, and I got all of it done for ~$800-900. I also saved a bit by buying the serpentine belts directly from Acura, as opposed to buying the ones from the shop where they would have been ~$50 more. If you do a bit of research, you can keep it under $1k, but be prepared to shell out some cash. The timing belt replacement is a time-intensive job.
