I have a Bosch automotive designer handbook, and the SAE regulations are very strict, the pollution standards are strict and vehicles must be fitted with a vast array of pollution preventative devices to enter the US. US is very difficult to accept compliance. the tail lights must be a certain height. three now! regulation bumpers must be able withstand X amount of abuse, child seats must be accomodated for...the list goes on...

what do you mean by illegal? they CAN be imported (legally) but it is very difficult to do so (getting a registered importer to do it, taxes, customs, clearing it with certain departments in the govt, etc). HOWEVER they will never be street legal, they are track only vehicles. The reason for that is that they Japanese safety and pollution standards are different from USA ones. Like bob stated above, the taillights and headlights have to be changed (from glass to plastic) the bumper supports need to be modified, ALL glass (windows, windshield, etc) must be changed.....the list is long. There are a few skylines, mainly R33s and a few R32s that were brought in through a company called Motorex that are legal in the US. However the company was also selling them illegally and was shut down so they will not be making more. So long answer short....they were never released here so there is no data on how safe and smog friendly they are so they are not allowed on the street. Are there illegal/state titled ones out there....of course. People bring them in through Mexico and Canada often enough and state title them or re-vin them as 240sx (highly illegal) but that doesnt make them federally legal (even with a state title) and when cops find them, at least in Ca, they impound them and crush them. Just an Fyi if you plan on "legally" acquiring one.
