There are a few ways to do this. In general, its best to find a donor car with a floor shifting automatic and swap out the respective parts for a clean OEM look. You can also install an aftermarket floor shifter from B&M etc, to the automatic transmission you ultimately install into your Comet. These aftermarket shifters will usually use a simple solid pushrod linkage to the transmission armature. You will remove the pin that holds the column shifter, so you'll only have the small hump where the shifting arm used to be If you use donor car that has a floor/console shifter, you can use that steering column that will be without the hump.
