What causes the engine to stall when putting the transmission in reverse or forward?

Asked by mavman Dec 02, 2014 at 05:06 PM about the 1977 Mercury Comet

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The car is a 77 mercury comet with a 302V8. It appears to have a C4. The engine runs
fine when in park or neutral. When engaging the transmission at idle, it seems to be in
direct drive with no slip.

I'd check to see if the vacuum modulator was mis-adjusted or bad.
