Fuel pump sounds like it is working, but only a small amount of fuel comes into the filter.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car ran well, but I took it in for smog and the technician let it idle and it shut down.
Seemed like it was out of gas so I got more and restarted it. It cut off and wouldn't
restart. Is it possible some line(charcoal filter) is loose and causing no gas to be
pumped? I've tried repeatedly and can't start it. If the pump is good what else can
cause it not to pump? The pump seems new and sounds right when ignition is on.
It's a 1978 MGB

Just because you hear it does not mean it is pumping fuel, have the fuel pressure checked.

T_S_T is right just because you can hear it does not mean its pumping. There is a filter in the gas tank on the pump that may be clogged. Also check for collapsed and worn out rubber fuel lines that maybe sucking in air.

If you don't have a pressure gauge you can try the following; loosenen the banjo at the pump to see if gas is coming out? After that, go to the carb and see if it is making it that far. Be very careful doing this to avoid a fire. just loosen them enough to see a wet spot develop or a slight squirt and instantly tighten it back up. If you have pressure at both places, you probably have a carburetor problem.

Finally! After much anguish and frustration I had it towed to an MG repair shop and they replaced the faulty (after market, plastic cased) fuel pump. Runs great now, new tires and it's a smooth ride. Thanks for the tips and help. I just wanted to do it on the cheap (not gonna happen these days). Smogged, registered and on the road!!
