what would cause the starter solinoid to fail to engage

tried rocking the car to free off the starter tried turning the key and nothing happened this has happened twice before and then the car starts i dont think its the imobiliser as bump starting it works so what would cause the solinoid to stop engageing?

It is probably a loose wire on the solenoid. There should be a spade connector on the end of a thin wire attached to the solenoid. It is quite common for this to make poor contact - remove it and then put it back on. If it feels loose use some pliers to gently close the connector up a bit.

inspected the wire earlier today and it was damaged so replaced it and it now works fine but thanks we were both on the same wave length
