Engine timing

Asked by GuruW8MVX May 18, 2018 at 04:25 AM about the 2008 BMW X5

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My x5 went in with the slightest rattle, they concluded that the timing was
slightly out, so they say they reset it, they put everything back and rea the
engine but now the noise is amplified ten fold !
They now say they need to replace the timing chain, guides and also the
hydrolic tensioner !!
A few thousand pounds!!!
Is this right, I have been told that you can not reset the timing on the engine

Mine broke driving at 20 mph, (2008 BMW X5) - after getting it recovered to a BMW garage they confirmed timing chain broke - £2700 to strip - engine has to come out as this is NOT a service item. Lots of damage - all valves, cams etc. bill is around £7500 as they managed to salvage the head. Have written a long letter of complaint to BMW demanding they cover this. Replacement parts, chain tensioner, chain are modified, proving this is a know design falut!

I think we all need to get together as I’m more convinced then ever that the timing chain is a design fault...?I had my X5 towed into the BMW garage after allowed clank are driving they told me it was the timing chain and they could mend ifor a 1000 .... when I went to pay my bill I was told it was time to get rid of my car and replace it for a newer version as the mend would not hold after less than three months of driving the car the engine blew it’s totally disgusting I think the design team put all the efforts into the mini takeover and we are left footing the bill the only way to deal with big company’s is to get the press involved ...
